Deborah Falls

My work has been evolving as I find myself in new places and environs. My observations have been shifting from the garden to the field to the stream to the ocean. It is where I am and what I see that motivates my imagery. I choose handwoven silks for their variation and texture that are enhanced by painting with silk dyes. With the combination of the silks and the brilliance and translucency of the silk dyes, I try to capture the richness of my environment and subject. I use light in my work to create an intimate sense of space and time. I work with real specimens drawing from and actually using them in the process. My process involves techniques that I have employed in my printmaking, drawing and textile design experience. One of my goals has been to eliminate the use of resist in silk painting in order to create a cleaner lighter edge to define shape and to see nature, as one might, on a summer’s day.
