Based on actual field sketches, the larger pieces are drawn with charcoal on stretched canvas. Loose graphite comes next, applied dry with brushes, selectively scored, erased, then spray fixed. As I build up contrast and tone, one layer over the successive ones before, I sometimes add pastel, also scored, sanded then spray fixed. The texture I have applied ( heavy gesso, randomly scored and grooved) alternately allows all of these layers to either sit on the top most surface or remain in the deeper grooves. I travel to my models’ homes- the bush- and further my anatomical knowledge buy drawing in surgeries and necropsies. While anatomy is important, I use the line to describe mood, gesture, and action. Abstractions happen this way, randomly, by surprise, and I will incorporate them into the final image.
