My pastels explore surface texture and the illusion of color through building up layers of pastel over that texture. I apply pastel in 4 or 5 layers over black or tinted linen or over a sanded ground. The challenge of using oil pastel is their limited pallet, so I juxtapose and layer them for my desired result.
