Jeff, a colleague and friend, had the kind of look that made me want to pick up my paintbrush. he just had the style and the stance that was a painting. When I convinced Jeff to come to the studio for a sitting, another friend, Miriana was rummaging through my old clothes to assemble a Texan cowgirl outfit. She danced, he played guitar and I painted her instead.
The image tha resulted from that sitting is part of the visual diary that makes up my work. The series of portraits are an unexpected chronology of my life and the faces and personalities that have touched me. But more than a personal timeline, I strive for these images to show a more universal human reality, whether it is the intimacy between friends, or the distance people can feel even while they sit in the same room. Every piece attempts to dissect human relationships by visual means. If a stranger can lok at one of my portraits and be reminded of a person, a time or an emotion that they once felt, then that painting is a success.
