Bruce Johnson

My passion for pottery began to be realized in 1983 when I graduated from college in North Carolina. While there, I had the opportunity to work and to study with many of the local potters surrounding the famous Jugtown area, known for its traditional and contemporary pottery techniques.

After graduating from college, I traveled back to the Midwest to accept a job at one of the nation’s largest producers of handmade pottery. Having the experience of working there for 10 years, I learned a vast array of pottery techniques which complemented the traditional techniques I studied in school. I also had the opportunity to work with potters who came from throughout the United States and Europe.

In 1993 I left there and started Bruce Johnson Clay Studio in Lake Mills Wisconsin.

Today, I draw from all of these experiences to design and create my own decorative ceramic art. I chose clay as a medium because it allows me to express myself in a variety of ways. My young son once told me that I have the best job in the world because I get dirty all day and nobody yells at me for it.

My ceramic pieces represent my desire to provide an interactive and meaningful part in other’s lives. By creating these pieces, I know that others can continue to participate in an ever evolving process of clay creation, as well as interact with the elements of life itself. I hope that each piece of pottery I create will carry forth that eternal, elemental energy into your life.

Today, the artist in me creates what the craftsman in me reproduces.
