Barbara Fellman & Harris M. Fellman
Our baskets are strongly influenced by Native American and Shaker designs of the Northeastern United States. Although their original designs were primarily functional, we have used “artistic license” to create baskets that embody our creative spirit and interpretation of this fine craft.
The traditional over-under rhythm of the weaver, leaves many avenues open to design as we progress through the completion process. It is during this process that variations from the original functional designs become apparent, as we often use items found in nature. Items which we prefer to call “gifts of Mother Earth”.
Feathers, quills, shed antlers, bark, arrow heads, leather, are just few of the myriad items which have found their way into our designs over the years. We are certain that there are items, (as yet unfound by us) that will continue to be incorporated in the future.
I will prepare all the materials for the weaving process, which includes hand dyeing all the colored weavers, and then weaving them into the many designs we offer. After the basket is “staked up”, Harris then packs the weavers, which tightens the basket in preparation for turning the stakes down. He then prepares the rims, using a traditional scarf-joint on both the inner and outer rims. These rims are then doubled lashed to the basket, using twisted sea grass to cover the exposed stakes. While narrow reed is often the lashing material of choice, many of our more delicate designs are lashed with waxed linen. Harris also prepares and hand carves all of the handles incorporated in many of our designs.
All of our baskets are created “free-form”. That is, without the use of any mold. Accordingly, every basket is an original. While I am responsible for the design of each creation, much discussion and free flow of ideas continues between us.
All of our baskets are finished using a proprietary stain-sealer developed over the years. Each creation is signed, numbered and dated.
While many of our designs are repeated, we are always seeking new ideas. Often eliminating some, creating others. Nothing is ever static in this art form. This feature alone makes the creative process a joyful and fulfilling effort. One which we look forward to with anticipation.
