Andrew Shea
Amdrew Shea whose work is internationally recognized, is a native of Minnesota. Inspired by molecular and architectural structures, this glass artist first studied the sciences – chemistry, biology, inchthyology – where he learned to look beyond the surface. He transferred this interest to the study of fine arts and glass blowing in the early 1970’s. ” I love the geometric shapes and crystalline forms, ” says the artist. Shea transforms such shapes into beautiful and functional perfume bottles.
There is a long history of “forging” containers among artisans. This tradition arose from the need for functional artifacts, as well as an inherent desire to collect and store that which is precious – be it ordinary water or exotic perfume.
“I have always thought the perfume bottle was underrated as a format for artistic expression. It has so much to offer – form, color, surface, depth, interior and exterior. The stopper allows an interplay that isn’t available anywhere else. Facets are integral to the piece, they define the form and are the entrance to the interior.”
Shea exhibits widely throughout the country and has been recognized with numerous award for his finely-crafted pieces. Says Minneapolis gallery owner, M.C. Anderson, “Andrew Shea is the most important perfume vessel artist in the U.S. Andrew is always consistent and fine tunes the vision that gives the artist passion – the vessel is a passion. His vision of perfection is seen in each piece.”
Shea holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota, and has been working in glass since 1973. Although he still travels, the artist has been based at SemiAutomatic Glass Studios and Gallery, which he helped organize and build in 1978. He resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife Carole and sons, Andy and Dan.
