My current paintings represent only the last six or seven years of my 25-year career as an artist, although I feel all my efforts have led directly to these paintings. They are produced by painting layers on canvas or board. The first layer is a gesso underpainting, followed by two or more coats of oil paint.I started out as a photographer. Even now, I use photos liberally in composing my paintings. I may use only one photo per painting, or I may combine three or four. In any case, by the time I add my own stylistic changes, the painting is far from being photographic. However, upon first impression, I’m still asked “Where is this?”, referring to a particular painting. These paintings are not meant to be a specific place but metaphors for places and feelings about places. I believe movement (or perhaps a pause for’ reflecting on movement) plays a part of these paintings — movingalong the road, moving through life, carrying memories of what’s behind, ‘and anticipating what’s around the curve, or over the horizon.
