Alan McNiel

My recent work involves unusual combinations of photography and oil painting. I take hundreds of photos and create a composite sketch. Over this charcoal drawing, black & white (digital) photos are attached to portions of the canvas, and the entire surface is painted with oil and encaustic. In the finished painting some aspects retain photographic clarity, while others are obscured to varying degrees.

Text is included in various ways; such as signage, newspapers, and excerpts from my writing. I often think of words in terms of rythm as I paint, building an image that somehow “sounds” like the feeling of being inside a cafe’, a museum, or a crowded street.

In addition to original paintings, both giclee’ and traditonal prints are available in limited editions.
