Joseph Nicephore Niepce’s 1827 photograph, ‘View from the Window at La Gras’, took all day to expose; the sun wrapping the buildings with light on two sides. The light from today’s scanner coupled with a dual lens moves across the object as if it was the sun moving across the sky. The exposure, however, is now reduced to minutes and the resulting image captures the aspirations of William Henry Fox Talbot’s, ‘Photogenic Drawings.’ Karl Blossfeldt published ‘Urformen der Kunst’ (Original Forms of Art) in 1928; a collection of botanicals photographed with a large format camera with 30x magnification. I fell in love.
