Sam Steph

My art is inspired by my environment. I construct abstract, often three-dimensional work that incorporates repurposed and newly painted wood surfaces. Some of the pieces contain hundreds of individually cut and joined parts. This process came to me by accident mostly. I was always arranging and organizing smaller bits of wood from cabinetry projects. One day while arranging these bits, I was struck by the beauty, and my craft was born. Communities and cultures fragment around us. Our world seems endlessly divided. However, our need for belonging to something greater than ourselves brings us back together time and again. This is the thread that runs throughout my work.
