The art of hand colored photographs flourished before color film was invented. To create this work, I arrange my vintage objects in a vignette scene and captured the photographic image using medium format cameras and black and white film. I used traditional darkroom techniques to hand-print the image on black and white silver gelatin paper with a matte textured surface. The painting step involves applying the color by hand with soft cotton and then using tiny paintbrushes to get finer detail. Adding the colors is slow and deliberate, but bit-by-bit, the print paper transforms and comes to life as a vibrant hand colored painting. My artwork is united by an eye for beauty in the unexpected and detail often missed.
