When I was a child in Washington, DC, I wanted to live in the woods and be as close to nature as possible. I also believed in fairies, and would spend hours creating hideaways in the forest where they and I could live. Designing and building tiny cottages, making clothes, utensils, furniture and all the related accoutrements that were necessary for a comfortable fairy lifestyle became my Grand Plan for years. As I grew older I didn’t forget those early dreams, and these pots reflect that early love of nature and the outdoors. Each piece is individually handcrafted and, while there are some that are similar, no two are ever exactly alike. I often treat the clay as cloth, joining clay ‘leaves’ together to create forms wholly dependent on the shapes of the leaves themselves (imagine a football), or add them to other forms as accents. One of the most challenging aspects of my work is that I can only create when there are leaves available; one might say that I am ‘seasonally challenged’. (In fact,I’m going through this panicky period right now here in N. Michigan, where frosty nights have frozen most of my best sources.) Somehow, I manage to keep working, though, and many of the results have been terrific.
