About The Technique
Shibori is a complex ancient Japanese art of embellishing textiles by shaping the cloth and securing it before dying. Natural fabrics are manipulated by pleating, knotting or binding to provide resist in a dying process. Starting with a variety of high-quality silks, Laura personally creates a line of sophisticated Shibori shawls and scarves. The process starts with flat, white silk which is hand dyed to create the base design. The piece is then hemmed, folded and pleated around a pole. Careful attention is given to the appropriate methods required to balance, offset or contrast the colors with the binding method which will be implemented. Because silk fabric has an excellent “memory,” the pleated Shibori piece will hold its shape with proper care.
