Watercolor, gouache & egg tempera paintings

Watercolor is by definition any pigment that is soluble in water. I often blend a variety of water-media including egg tempera, gouache, and transparent watercolor in combination on the same painting. This means that I am not a watercolor purist. The most traditional watercolor painter leaves virgin paper for the whitest whites while using a buildup of thinly applied transparent washes. Instead, I selectively sandwich heavy pigments and gouache with my transparent washes while weaving the surface of the painting together layer by layer. I believe that it is good to experiment with all that the medium has to offer and that rules need not apply when it comes to making art.

My primary focus seems to center around combining strong values, bold color and vivid lighting into my paintings. The effect of light and shadow continues to hold my interest even as my choice of subject matter evolves.

My most recent body of work combines nostalgic imagery with a flair for contemporary Pop Culture.

Over the years I have worked professionally as a studio painter, college professor, free-lance illustration, and fine art publisher. My art has allowed me to work inside my chosen field while making a living by doing what I most love.

I was elected into signature membership of the American Watercolor Society, New York, NY in 1989. I am an art graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma, 1972.
