Kostas Ulevicius

My aesthetic interests have always more or less been “anthropocentric” – I was since long ago attracted by shapes of human body, especially the face. Fascination with portrait and, in the words of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, with the “face of the other” as a source for ethics and “the first act of dialogue”. For me such “dialogues” with shapes of various (mostly imaginary) faces are never-ending. I am attracted by “strong” expressive shapes and normally these are the shapes much larger than life-size. The use of colour is crucial and I meditate on it for a significant amount of time. Finally, its choice is almost entirely intuitive, but the criteria for such a choice is that it should emphasise the “character” or “inner self” of the sculptural portrait.
