Kelvin Schartz & Kathryn Schartz

Our work is made from a variety of recycled metals, including carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, brass and alumninum. Each piece is cut with a torch and then bent, pounded and shaped before grinding to a smooth finsih. Some pieces are blued with a torch to add various shades of gold, bronze, purple and blue. They are assembled using a welder and finsihed with clear laquer. Many designs incorporate whimsy along with kinetic movement. There are varying degrees of functionality, from purely decorative to sundials, birdbaths, clocks, tables and candleholders. We are self-taught. Kelvin learned his metalworking skills growing up on a farm in central Kansas. Kathryn has learned much from Kelvin and assists mostly in initial design work and finishing. We use assistants who grind rough edges, tie windchimes and package our pieces.

We have done several large custom projects for landscapers, restaurants and other businesses in the Lawrence and Kansas City area.
