Jill Mayberg

My work and ideas have evolved over the years from a confluence of traditions such as primitive fold art, expressionism and abstract modernism, which is expressed in my colorful and eclectic paintings.

The process includes laying down mixed medias, especially old sepia toned papers and other found objects, mostly on stretched artist’s canvas, and then painting/drawing on top of these for dimensional textured look.

Also used in the work is plaster, wood, graphite, water media, acrylic mediums and colored pencils and image transfers.

I tent to rework colors and the painting many time in a time intensive process. It is important for me to have the freedom to completely wipe out an entire idea/painting, or change the color scheme and details in order to create an effective painting.

People often ask me what the collaged text/numbers etc. mean. It is an intuitive, associative, abstract process of words and graphics that strike me as interesting and are visually appealing. I love old books, graphics, and scraps of text and found writings. Unknown bits of pieces from other lives that intersect my own.
