I apply colored gesso to the substrate. Next, a quick sketch with chalk. Then I apply the oil pastels, which are akin to buttery crayons. I block in saturated color, top to bottom, and blend in accents using clay-shaping tools, rags, and exacto knives to manipulate the color around the piece. Spray fixative and acrylic varnish finish the work.
