My work is a reflection of my own personal experiences, thoughts, and emotional response to circumstances, typically out of my control. I am especially fascinated with common textures and objects that, either due to our busyness or disregard, go unnoticed. A bright red fire hydrant, a muted pink bandaid, text on a manhole cover, the soles of my children’s shoes, the grungy type on industrial machinery. I am not only inspired by the randomness of such seemingly unrelated objects, but also take impressions from them in order to create the stamps that I use to texture my work. Each object is hand built using stoneware clay, stains, underglazes, glazes and is fired multiple times before a steel wire post is added to the back of each piece allowing the three dimensional object to occupy a two dimensional space. . I use repetition, size, depth, light, shadows and color to create large scale wall installations that blur the lines between 2-D and 3-D. www.jeniferthoem.com
