I am a self-taught mixed media artist creating cairn collages as a symbol of balance. Each of my intricate collages are comprised of a combination of more than fifty pieces of altered magazine papers, multi-layered hand created papers, recycled items and botanicals. Using techniques such as Japanese momigami, each piece contains depth and texture that captivates my viewers with details.
As a collage artist the use of paper, particularly the use of old magazines, intrigues me in that we as a society continually move towards a paperless culture. By committing to a paper based medium I am, to an extent, acting in an archival endeavor as much as aesthetic engagement. With a concern for sustainability, my collages use pre-existing materials to create new works of art. Many of the materials used in my collages would otherwise be discarded and end up in the ever-expanding landfills.
The inspiration for my work comes from my time spent in the Rocky Mountains. I find myself constantly in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds us. Through my work, I aim to capture the essence of this beauty and share it with the world. I strive to create art that not only evokes a sense of wonder and amazement but also reminds us of the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations. Not being classically trained I get lost in intuitive expression when creating my pieces. I submerge myself into studying various media forms and enjoy the opportunity to experiment in creating textures while not being confined to rules or expectations.
