Jeffrey Zachmann

Inspired by his passion for the machine age, Carl Zachmann’s kinetic work explores the designs, textures, and movements of the industrial revolution. An undergraduate background in art and a master’s degree in historical archeology lend an undeniable academic and aesthetic credibility to his work. The gears in his pieces are created based on the designs of originals from the time period. They are cut from sheets of steel before being layered and welded together in a method that mimics the casting process of the period originals. The raw gears are then distressed to give them a vintage appearance and are arranged to create the final composition. The finished piece, set in motion by an electric motor and set against a static background of distressed metal accented with vintage hardware and graphics, pays homage to America’s industrial past in an increasingly electronic world.
