Dolan Geiman
Often perceived as paintings, my art pieces are actually composed of hundreds of pieces of paper, cut by my own hands, and then affixed to a wood panel. All of the paper I use for these collages comes from abandoned spaces–old factories, old farmhouses, warehouses, and materials I find on the streets and nothing newer than 1960. Once I have gathered up a pile of vintage materials, I sketch out an image on board and start cutting and glueing all of the papers to the surface. My images often tell a story, and my subject matter is usually derived from folktales I heard as a child growing up in a cabin in Virginia. Though I am often asked if I have a special tool to cut the papers for me, I only use scissors to cut the paper. I do not use any other tools or pinking shears to make the cuts.
