Though it is not a material commonly associated with fine jewelry, I am drawn to working with acrylic because of its versatility. It is accessible, affordable, and can easily be shaped, formed and colored to suit any of my ideas. I choose not to treat the acrylic like a gem. I want it to be its own material, so I don’t set it in traditional settings. I find no challenge to framing and confining it. I pride myself on a line of jewelry and accessories that feature a mixture of innovative design and a fashion forward use of color. Each design begins as an extensive series of sketches which is drawn onto a block of acrylic, and cut out using a band saw. Next, the acrylic is carved using coarse files and abrasive cloth, and dyed with a pigment-solvent mixture. I then affix the acrylic with a hand fabricated silver piece using stone-setting and cold-joining techniques. All the work, from start to finish is done by me.
