In this new line of work is my primary intention is to activate the surface of the clay. Various tools are used to impress lines and shapes into the surface creating a spontaneous graphic design. Detailed painting with Terra sigilatta, a refined clay slip, sets off the individual elements of the design. I mix a white base of the slip and add ceramic stains to get my base colors and then mix these to get my own palette. After the first firing,a black copper wash is applied to entire surface. When dried the copper wash is wiped off leaving the copper in the recessed areas. The work is fired a second time. Earthenware clay.
