I draw from life, usually in the bush, using charcoal on paper for the first draft, then using the initial sketch to inspire the much larger version done in my stateside studio. Adding marble dust to gesso thickens the surface where it will record random marks and imprints. A two week drying period followed by light sanding, and surface is ready for the first drawing. I use my bare hands, grinding charcoal or dust into the irregular surface, as well as selective sanding and erasure . Occasionally I throw water at the surface to abstractly affect the line work.
