William Cantwell
My serigraphs (silk screen prints) reflect the environments I love. I spend my summers in the Philadelphia area, where I was born; and since 1992 I have spent my winters in South Florida, where the tropical colors and spirit of the area, including that of the neighboring Bahamas and Keys, have had a profound influence on my art. I try to reflect and express attitude and atmosphere in my serigraphs through the use of shape, color, design and subject matter. I use oil-based printing ink for my serigraphs. After making a stencil on a screen with a water-soluble block-out, I print the entire edition of that color before erasing the stencil, thus freeing it up for the next stencil (color) which I subsequently layer on top of the previously-printed edition after drying. The process continues, sometimes with as many as 21 different screens (colors) until the final print (entire edition) is finished. Thus, each print is a part of a true limited edition since each screen is erased after each step of the procedure. There is, therefore, no master screen. I welcome any questions regarding my work.
