Rodrigo de Oliveira
My name is Rodrigo de Oliveira, and I’m an artist and woodworker based in the Houston area. I work primarily with wood, creating geometric compositions that explore movement, depth, and visual ambiguity. My pieces live at the intersection of structure and spontaneity — a place where precision meets imagination. Each artwork begins with raw, tangible material: wood cut by hand, shaped, painted, and assembled with intention. But the final result often contradicts the solidity of the process. The lines, layers, and color relationships I build can feel like they’re shifting, vibrating, or even floating. I’m fascinated by how something physically fixed can still suggest motion — how repetition, rhythm, and visual contrast can play tricks on the eye. Color is central to my work. I see it as an infinite field of possibility, where small changes in tone or placement can completely transform a composition. I’m drawn to the way color interacts with light, with grain, with shape — and how these combinations can evoke very different emotional responses from each viewer. Some people feel balance and calm in my work; others experience a kind of dissonance or optical tension. I love that. That range of interpretation, that ambiguity, is not just a byproduct — it’s the point. My background in woodworking gives me a deep respect for material, process, and craft. I’m not only building images — I’m building objects. They have weight, texture, edges. And yet, I’m always trying to push beyond their physical limits. I want the viewer to get lost, to look twice, to wonder: is this flat or dimensional? Is it static or moving? Living and working in the Houston area has played a huge role in my development as an artist. This city has given me space — both literally and creatively — to experiment, refine, and grow. Over the years, I’ve been able to deepen my relationship with my materials and expand the visual language I’m building, one that speaks through repetition, contrast, structure, and endless variations of color. My work doesn’t aim to deliver answers — it invites a moment of pause, a shift in perception, and hopefully, a feeling that stays with you long after you walk away.
