As a woodworker, Im deeply committed to merging tradition with innovation to create meaningful, sustainable art. Often, my initial inspiration is found in patterns created by nature. I start with a sketch that, at first, is almost described as a mood: swirls created by wind in a wheat field; ripples from a pebble tossed in a pond; sunlight filtering through a leaf. Im fascinated by the juxtaposition of these natural patterns and textures with manmade forms and geometries found in the built world.
My process then moves to parametric modeling, a technique that allows me to explore fluid and complex geometries inspired by nature and architecture. By manipulating these forms through algorithms I write myself, I craft designs that push the boundaries of what wood can achieve while still honoring its natural beauty and timeless qualities.
I then bring these ideas to life using sustainably sourced midwestern woods and self-laminated dyed plywoods. The crafting process itself is where my passion for the combination of emerging tools with traditional hand craft comes into play. This allows me to work directly with the woods grain, texture, and color, giving me control over every detail, from smooth curves to sharp edges.
My work is about blending modern design with integrity of traditional craftsmanship. Each piece I create reflects this balance, highlighting the intersection of technology, handcraft, sustainability, and the enduring beauty of wood.
