Jack Brumbaugh
These drawings are made by Jack in his Fairhaven, Maryland studio. The media are oil pastel and occasionally oil paint and colored pencil. The surface is stretched canvas, and the finished piece is fixed with a spray varnish, and displayed without glass. The choice of oil pastels facilitates the exploration of depth of color and plasticity of the medium, as well as the possibilities involving gesture and line. The media together with the drawing techniques provide an interesting surface and texture, and the end effect is painterly but with the tactile nature of the drawing process. The choice of subject for the past several years has been water and water surfaces. The movement of water seems to lend itself well to the arabesques and calligraphy of drawing. The work is successful when it works as a recognizable image, but then draws the viewer into explore the abstract macro level of color, line, and texture.
