2023

Christopher Curtis

I moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1987, shortly after becoming licensed to practice law. As a release from work, I started painting watercolor landscapes and portraits, taking instruction from Fort Worth artist Judy Sager. In 2015, I recognized my desire to recreate scenes from nature and the outdoors using strong, intense colors, rather than the soft watercolor medium. I started experimenting with broad brush strokes of bright colors of acrylic or oil on canvas to express the emotion of places that have touched my soul. I also felt compelled to capture places in the Texas Hill Country and Big Bend before they become overrun by development and tourism. In the process of trying something new, I discovered my own style of expression that is simple, authentic, and accessible. I feel that my style embraces some elements of both folk art and expressionism. I also continue to work in watercolor landscapes and portraits. In 2020, during COVID, I set up a studio in Fort Worth at the Victory Arts Center. I have now retired from the practice of law and work as an artist, musician, and as an adjunct criminal justice professor at TCU.
