Anne Marie Haynes

My story is very simple. I started with a love for wood and time spent with family. After a few tumultuous years, I sought simplicity, a way to express my creativity by doing something that was “real” – something I could see come to life before me. To watch a piece of wood morph from raw into refined, while in my very hands, is quite a gift. To uncover the natural beauty that lies within is my joy. The process used to create my pieces, begins with a “rough cleaning”; typically a wire brush which allows me to determine the integrity of the wood. From then, I use what would be equivalent to dental cleaning instruments in which to remove all debris from even the tiniest spaces. Sanding the overall piece begins with 60 grit paper and ends with 1500 grit…a minimum of 6 stages of sanding per piece. I began making accent furniture from reclaimed wood. In order to market myself more broadly, I started using remnants from those large pieces, to make unique serving blocks…some of which are 2-3″ thick; I call them “statement pieces for the home”. Most all serving blocks are adorned with recycled wine-hoop handles, which I cut & bend myself, antlers (naturally harvested) or recycled leather. I also brand each piece (by hand – no machine made brand is used), date and number each one, which is important to me so that customers understand the value I place on each piece. I purchase wood from Texas mills that sustainably harvest their lumber. I prefer pieces, which offer a lot of character (these pieces do require more work but the results are astounding)! Whether it be the grain or unusual species or shape, this is how I choose the wood. Of course, integrity & sustainability, is paramount. From beginning to end, my hands and eyes are constantly transforming and creating. To make each serving piece 100% food-safe, I use organic beeswax and food-safe mineral oil, purchased from an Apothecary. Everything I select for my pieces – outside of the screws that hold the handles & rubber feet in place – is USA made. I am truly blessed and appreciate the amazing, ever-growing support from friends & family.
