John Fields & Heather Fields
Our glass work is the tangible expression of my life long fascination with the visual effects of light as it plays with color and John’s strong sense of form. Our goal as glass artists working in collaboration for more then 20 years has become to spark the subtle, possibly even subconscious connection between our suggestion of an image and each individual viewer and their own unique experiences. We attempt this idea of conveying place in our glass work by using snippets of both recollected and imagined places. The suggestion of these elements, patches of sky, pieces of ground, and the essence of atmosphere, are incorporated into our work using a variety of glassblowing techniques. Classic techniques such as incalmo, joining two bubbles of glass together while hot, can create horizon and sky. Overlays of several transparent colors interface to create depth and luminosity. Linear trails of glass formulated to react chemically with the base layer create spontaneous bursts of color. In addition, we have developed our own unique methods to layer and knead color into molten glass that can evoke elements of our choosing from grassy fields to the swirling cosmos.
