I use extreme close ups of flowers to illustrate the wonder, beauty and science of creation. I find that the back of a bloom is often more interesting and beautiful than the front. So recently I began choosing flowers and plants and shooting them from behind to share a new view with those who see my work. Artist Georgia O’Keeffe said, “Everyone has many associations with a flower… But one rarely takes the time to really see a flower. I have painted what each flower is to me and I have painted it big enough so that others would see what I see.” Following her path, and seeking a fresh perspective, I shoot these “Blossom Bottoms” so people will see flowers with new eyes. I planted a flower garden this spring to provide new plants to photograph and I visit botanic gardens here in Texas and around the country. I also choose blooms from florists and shoot those in my homemade studio. I use a macro lens wich allows me to shoot extreme close-ups and focus on details.
