Amy Gillespie

I strive to create harmony between the two very different mediums of fiber and wood. Inspiration for my work comes from the interplay of color, textures and light in nature. My background lies in fiber, but I have always been fascinated by wood. My creative process often begins at the lumberyard where I hunt for interesting pieces of wood.

In order to achieve integration between the materials, I allow the wood to set the tone for the piece. My compositions play off the flow of the grain. I wet and work the raw wool with my hands until it “felts” together. I then apply a crust of acrylic paint to both sides and cut it into strips. These cross sections of wool and paint are then inlaid into a channel I have routed into the wood.
