H.C. Porter

My work is a question of identifying with my characters and their environments. You must respond to their realness-to what they bring to you and what you can bring to them. I am a painter, printmaker and photographer, creating 2-d mixed media originals I call “environmental portraits”. I use my original photograph, create a photo silkscreen, then hand paint layers of acrylic and Prismacolor pencil bringing vibrant color and movement to my high contrast black ink images. My work is narrative in nature, storytelling about day-to-day trials and tribulations and rejoicing in the simple accomplishments and spaces. In my recent project, titled Blues @ Home: Mississippi’s Living Blues Legends I have set out to document Mississippi’s legendary storytellers…the living legends of Mississippi blues. I hope viewers recognize these are not works just about music and musicians, but about the human spirit – about lives lived and the culture from which they come…stories of our shared humanity.
