Michelle Mardis
Michelle’s current body of work is a retrospect in nostalgia with a modernism take. She built on childhood summertime memories by going to the beach & lake with her family. These memories and often staying with her beautiful grandmother reminded her of glamorous 1940s Hollywood. The simple objects such as life jackets, candy, and popsicle treats bring thoughts of happy childhood memories and harken to the past. Michelle’s style of painting is clean, minimalistic, and bold, leaning on the mid-century aesthetic. The construction of her paintings starts with building her wooden cradles by hand, cutting each piece of lumber and framing to her desired dimensions for each original painting. Many hours go into this process which also includes priming and sanding each piece numerous times. Also, the paintings are hand sanded between layers of paint to give a smooth result in the completion of Michelle’s paintings.
