Art and more specifically, drawing, has always been one of my passions.
And, being the son of a creative professional I have had the good fortune to witness the lifelong enjoyment derived from expressing oneself through such passions. I was frequently encouraged to do likewise. In recent years painting joined hands with my first love, drawing, to produce the work I do today.
But painting, like drawing, or any artistic endeavor, requires a good dose of inspiration before it can begin. It’s that inspiration that provides the energy and emotion required to see a piece of work through to completion. Like a pin breaking through the elastic skin of a balloon and releasing the contents within, I’m propelled forward by that moment. Therefore, I constantly observe my surroundings, watching for shapes, colors, movement, people and events that will provide that motivation. I can never be sure from which direction it will come. From that point however, I am challenged to convey my thoughts and intentions through the piece and still maintain my desire to relax…to enjoy myself. When I clear my mind of any constraints, rules and laws of painting, the images that make their way onto the canvas are both therapeutic and intriguing to me.
I like to use oil paint primarily, and I like to paint on canvas. I find that it flows with greater ease, allows me to be more flexible, and provides richer color than I can get with other mediums. It is more consistent with my desire to not only express myself, but to do it with ease and spontaneity.
