Laurie Huff

My recent work of nature inspired abstracts capture the mood and feel of a place through the use of expressive line work and texture. Inspiration often comes from personal experience during walks along the lakeshore near my home or the serene beauty of land, trees and sky experienced during travel. I especially find wandering pavement cracks intriguing and often include them as linework in paintings as both textural elements and a way to lead the viewer through the painting.

I often begin my painting process with a bright acrylic wash and gestural mark making, as well as collage elements. Layers of oil paint and cold wax medium are applied to achieve textural qualities using a variety of tools and removal techniques reveal previous layers. The works are best viewed up close in person to appreciate the subtle nuances of the process.
