My current works are inspired by biology and ecosystems. Whether micro, or macro, these complex systems include both harmonious, and chaotic forces. I am particularly intrigued by human physiology. The human body is an incredibly complicated organic machine with its numerous and diverse activities of cells, tissues, organs, and systems. The dynamic of all these systems is akin to how multiple systems within aquatic ecosystems function. Because water is essential to life, the health of aquatic ecosystems directly relates to the health of people and other living creatures. My investigation of these themes employs elements of design including form, color, texture, and scale, resulting in sculpture and utilitarian pieces. I use dramatic texture to add movement to my pieces, inviting the viewer to engage tactilely with a piece. The experience and relationship a person has with my pieces is important to me. Through the act of using my utilitarian forms I engage the viewer in participating symbolically and literally in a biological, physiological process. I believe that well-designed ceramic art can add beauty to daily life while also serving a functional purpose.
