I am a self-taught watercolor artist currently residing in the United States. Born and raised in New Zealand, people in nature is a subject matter that quickly became incorporated into my art (I spent my formative years with siblings and friends in assorted fantastic landscapes). During the worldwide pandemic of 2020 I also started including text into my portraits; hand lettering pieces of prose from my personal notebooks which were written to work through daunting emotions and to lift my own morale. As a result my paintings turned into messages of hope for assorted viewers. My figures are often painted looking upwards and onwards, with either new lands behind them or strong words supporting them. Occasionally my watercolors will also include gold and silver leafing. I would describe my work as ‘updated art nouveau’ more than any other style, as combining figures and words and nature comes very easily to me in this format. Each painting has a high level of detail and layering and is heavily thought out from beginning to end. I also paint historical figures that have made an impact in my life, people who I believe should continue to be highlighted and celebrated.
