Sarah Murphy

My work in clay began after I encountered the pottery made by the indigenous people of New Mexico. I was mystified by the shiny black and red surfaces that gleamed like stones. It was because of this that I became enamored with the alternative firing methods of pit, saggar, and horse hair. I love the anticipation I feel when I recover the pots from the ashes after the pit or barrel has cooled. While my vessels may resemble traditional containers, they cannot hold water due to the nature of their firing. They are, instead, meant to function as artwork in the manner of a painting. My intention is for them to invite the viewer to ask questions as to how they are made and, as well, evoke the wonder and beauty of nature.
