My oil paintings are Classical Realism with many of them in the chiaroscuro style (the contrast of lights and darks). I have always admired the skill and beauty of the Old Masters and they serve as my inspiration. Very early on I decided to paint on wood panel for both its quality and longevity. High quality oils paints are used for their deep and vivid colors. The still-life paintings start with a focal point, I search out objects whose form, texture and color inspire me. Once I choose an object to paint I will add a mix of complimentary items, textiles, fruits, foliage, often raiding my garden for just the right piece. Portraits and landscapes are painted from life, sometimes using photographs for reference. The paintings all begin with an under painting to establish the composition and create the foundation for the darker features and subsequent layers of paint. Completed paintings are framed to complement the artwork. My training started in college where I studied commercial art however it was later in life I found my calling for fine art. While attending The Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago I had the opportunity to study under several talented artists that inspired me to go forward with my painting and helped me to develop my talent. From concept to completion the paintings are created solely by me, usually surrounded by music, in my home studio.
