Ed Pribyl

I am a self taught wood sculptor, and have been carving wood for over twenty years. I’ve always been inspired by the past, images, objects, people…There is beauty in what was once ordinary or even mundane, but is now lost. I am fascinated and inspired by characters of the past, whether that character is a milkman, or cowboy from a vintage tv show, they all have their story to tell. I choose wood as a medium, for its inherent warmth, its connection to the past. It’s uncomplicated, it can be as simple as a stick and knife, which is how I started this journey. A multi layered paint process finishes my work. Layers of paint are built up and broken down creating a patina, reflective of passing time. In creating work this way, I hope to make art that is relatable, accessible, and makes people smile. Sometimes serious, sometimes funny or a bit off center, every piece has its story to tell.
