SYMPOSIUMS, LECTURES, AND TOURS:
URBAN IMPACT: Public Art in Downtown Fort Worth
McDavid Studio
5th Street between Calhoun and Jones Streets

Sunday, April 20, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Meet two internationally renowned artists whose work will soon change the urban landscape of downtown Fort Worth: Cliff Garten (Cliff Garten Studios) and Christopher Janney (PhenomenArts, Inc.) co-sponsored by Fort Worth Public Art - a City of Fort Worth program managed by the Arts Council of Fort Worth & Tarrant County (
www.fwpublicart.org).
The Avenue of Light (image above right, courtesy Cliff Garten Studio) will complete the transformation of Lancaster Avenue into a revitalized, pedestrian oriented boulevard. Drawing inspiration from the Art Deco details of the Texas & Pacific Terminal lobby, Cliff Garten has designed a series of six soaring stainless steel sculptures that will bring a contemporary twist to this historic street.

Sound Environments of Fort Worth will fill the air inside the new Fort Worth Convention Center Parking Garage. This interactive soundscape will engage the senses, as will the transparent color glass corners and “fins” on this eleven story building now under construction ("Fin Sculpture," image lower right, courtesy of Jacobs Facilities, Inc.).
Visual presentations followed by an engaging dialogue about the nature and challenges of public art will take place a 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2008 in McDavid Studio.
Heritage Trails Self Guiding Walking Tour
Throughout Downtown
At your leisure!
Stroll through Fort Worth’s rich history presented by Heritage Trails, a series of decorative sidewalk markers identified with the iconic cubistic longhorn. Enjoy reading about the colorful stories of our past and compare photos of yesteryear to today’s street scenes.
Have your picture taken alongside the sleeping panther that rests on the Tarrant County Administration Building lawn. With a nod to our humble beginnings, the twice life-sized panther keeps a somnambulant watch over our now thriving city.
If you need help finding the trail, go to the kiosk at the Renaissance Worthington to view a map of the trail and find out where to obtain walking tour maps available in locations throughout downtown. Heritage Trails is collaboration between Downtown Fort Worth, Inc., City of Fort Worth, Fort Worth Chamber Foundation and Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Discussion - Music in Ancient China: An
Archaeological and Art Historical Study of Strings, Winds, and Drums
during the Eastern Zhou and Han Periods (770 BCE-220 CE).
Ingrid Furniss, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Art History
UT Arlington/Fort Worth Center
Santa Fe Station, 1401 Jones Street, Downtown
Thursday, April 17, 1:00 - 2:00 PM
Join author Dr. Ingrid Furniss in a lively discussion on her first book, Music in Ancient China: An Archaeological and Art Historical Study of Strings, Winds, and Drums during the Eastern Zhou and Han Periods (770 BCE-220 CE). Under contract with the academic publisher, Cambria Press (New York), the book will be published in the summer of 2008. The book will examine the numerous types of musical instruments that were found in early Chinese elite tombs, as well as the history of their development and usage in ancient musical practice. Wooden instruments (zithers, winds, and drums) that formed the basis for many early Chinese musical ensembles are the focus of the book. While bronze bells have been a topic of extensive research over the years, this book will be the first to examine the archaeology and history of wooden musical instruments and their role in ancient musical life in both ritual and entertainment capacities.
Dr. Furniss has worked on a number of research and exhibition-related projects at museums in the U.S., including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, St. Louis Art Museum, Seattle Asian Art Museum, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture at University of Washington (Seattle), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She has written articles on Asian art for museum journals and exhibition catalogues, including Princeton University Art Museum’s Recarving China’s Past: The Art, Archaeology, and Architecture of the Wu Family Shrines (2005).
In 2005, Furniss received her Ph.D. in Chinese Art and Archaeology from Princeton University. She has taught at University of Texas-Arlington since Fall 2006. Her courses deal with the art and archaeology of the Nonwestern world.
