Serena Kojimoto started making jewelry at Pasadena City College under Artist and teacher Christina Smith. In 1990 she moved from Los Angeles to New York City to study Metalsmithing and 20th Century Design while graduating from Parsons School of Design. She currently makes jewelry full time from her Los Angeles studio concentrating on a handful of wholesale clients, commission work, as well as traveling around the country attending Fine Craft Fairs.
The Jewelry is inspired by functional forms (ranging from everyday objects to industrial elements) travel experiences, nature, people and architecture, These shapes are softened, round and sensual with a combination of polished and textured surfaces, which flow together to create a sense of movement. A combination of wax carving and hand fabricating is employed to form the various collections. Hammering marks, forging techniques and multiple soldering styles are also used.
The artist states, " I feel the work appeals to people of all ages through the functionality of design, and a sense of fun. These are pieces that are thoroughly wearable and they are the things you feel good in."
Although the pieces have a modern feel, they are, at their core, timeless. The unique blend of masculine and feminine tones transcends the gender specific. Crafting in sterling silver and gold, accented by black neoprene, rubber, gemstones, and found objects creates a visual and tactile elegance, suitable for casual or formal settings.
